Wainscoting is a type of decorative wall covering that is typically made of wood. It can consist of four elements: panels, chair rail, mouldings and skirting.

Panels: Wall panelling is a decorative and functional way to cover your walls. Panels are typically made from wood or MDF and are installed at a specific height, depending on the desired look. They can provide protection for your walls and create depth within recessed styled wainscoting.

Chair rail: Chair rails, also known as dado rails, are horizontal wooden mouldings that are fixed to the walls around - typically installed at a height one metre from the floor. Traditionally they were installed to protect the walls from knocks and indents caused by the backs of chairs, nowadays they are used in wainscoting for aesthetic purposes, and come in a variety of styles, from simple to ornate.

Inlay mouldings: Inlay moulding is a decorative frame that can be used on walls, doors, and other surfaces. It is available in a variety of profiles and can be used to create a variety of looks. Inlay mouldings can be painted or stained to match the existing décor.

Skirting: Skirting is a type of trim that is installed at the bottom of a wall, and it can help to protect the wainscoting from damage and make the overall look of the wall more polished.

How is wainscoting installed?

When it comes to selecting the right layer of protection and depth for your design, the choices can vary. At Opulent Finishes, we offer two distinct methods for installing Wainscoting, each with its unique advantages.

Wainscoting directly on the walls: The most popular method of wainscoting Opulent Finishes offers, is installing directly onto the client’s plasterboard or rendered walls, streamlining the installation process. We use both glue and/or nails to secure the inlays and chair rails, guaranteeing a strong and enduring grip. As a wainscoting company, we highly recommend this particular option of wainscoting as it not only provides an opulent finish, but also proves to be a more cost effective choice for the majority of our clients.

Recessed Wainscoting: First, a base panel is installed on the wall. Then, another panel made of MDF is placed on top. This second panel has frame boxes cut out, and along the inner border of these cutouts, the inlay is installed. The inlay is securely attached to the back panel, creating a layer of visual depth to your wainscoting design. We recommended this option for wainscoting commercial projects, such a office fitouts, restaurants/bars and hotels, as it provides a layer of protection for plasterboard walls against dents and marks.
