WHAT IS BOARD AND BATTEN?

What is Board and Batten?

Board and batten cladding is a fantastic way to add architectural interest to your walls, transforming plain, flat surfaces into stunning focal points or elegant backdrops. Popular in living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and entryways, this design brings a structured and stylish look that enhances any residential or commercial space.

Our board and batten is typically installed by using pine boards, in a geometric style pattern that can make ceilings appear higher, add depth and texture, but remain modern and contemporary.

Board and batten panelling is a classic choice that combines vertical pine boards with horizontal pine timbers, known as battens. These battens are meticulously placed between the vertical boards, creating an evenly spaced, grid-like pattern that extends from floor to ceiling. This structured design offers a stylish and sophisticated look, adding both depth and character to any space.

The distancing between the panels can vary in scale from narrow, to more pronounced wide sections, depending on the aesthetic you wish to achieve.

Opulent Finishes offers an array of board and batten layouts, to suit various interior styles including modern farmhouse, minimalist, and even industrial designs. With us there is a board and batten layout to compliment any room in your home or business.

Board and battem is a type of decorative wall paneling that is typically made of pine wood. It can consist of four elements: boards, battens, rails and skirting.

Boards: The boards are the main panels that cover the wall. For interior board and batten, pine boards are commonly used, because they’re lightweight, easy to work with, and readily available. These boards are typically cut to fit the height of your wall from floor to ceiling. They can vary in width depending on the look you’re aiming for, but a common width is around 90mm.

Battens: Battens are the horizontal pine lengths that go in between the vertical boards. These pine battens are usually the same width as the boards at 90mm. Pine is also used for the battens for consistency in texture and finish. We use strong adhesives and nails to secure the battens directly onto the wall to create the distinctive look. They add depth and a visual break, giving the wall more character by creating a geometric pattern.

Chair Rail: When board and batten cladding is installed at waist height or three-quarters the height of the wall, a horizontal chair rail is typically installed on the top board. This is a horizontal piece that runs along the top edge of the boards and battens. The chair rail adds a finishing touch and can also add further depth depending on the moulding choice.

Skirting: Skirting not only protects the wall, but also enhances its overall appearance. One crucial factor is the depth of your skirting. It's important that the skirting isn't overshadowed by the battens, it should either be thicker or align smoothly with the battens to avoid an uneven, unfinished look.
